Chemistry (9701)

AS and A Level Chemistry notes following the Cambridge International 9701 syllabus, across physical, inorganic and organic chemistry and analysis.

Margin's Chemistry notes follow the Cambridge International AS & A Level Chemistry syllabus (9701), in two courses: AS Chemistry and A Level Chemistry.

Courses and papers#

CourseLabelCoversAssessed in
AS ChemistryASThe AS topics and practical skillsPaper 1 (multiple choice), Paper 2 (AS structured questions), Paper 3 (advanced practical skills)
A Level ChemistryA2The A Level topics and planning skillsPaper 4 (A Level structured questions), Paper 5 (planning, analysis and evaluation)

What the courses cover#

The syllabus is organised into four strands, each of which runs through both courses:

StrandASA Level
Physical chemistryAtomic structure, amount of substance, bonding, states of matter, energetics, redox, equilibria, ratesLattice energy and entropy, electrochemistry, further equilibria including buffers and KspK_{sp}, further kinetics
Inorganic chemistryPeriodicity, Group 2, Group 17, nitrogen and sulfurFurther Group 2 chemistry, transition elements
Organic chemistryFormulae and isomerism, hydrocarbons, halogenoalkanes, alcohols, carbonyls, carboxylic acids, nitrogen compounds, polymers, synthesisArenes, further functional groups, polymerisation, organic synthesis
AnalysisInfrared spectroscopy, mass spectrometryNMR spectroscopy, chromatography

The Chemistry courses are being written now, so their units fill in over time.

What to expect in a note#

  • Equations written with proper chemical notation, including state symbols and equilibrium arrows: NX2(g)+3 HX2(g)⇌2 NHX3(g)\ce{N2(g) + 3H2(g) <=> 2NH3(g)}
  • Reaction mechanisms described step by step, naming each curly-arrow movement
  • Comparison tables for closely related ideas, such as SN1\mathrm{S_N1} and SN2\mathrm{S_N2}
  • Practical skills blocks for titrations, enthalpy experiments, rates and tests for ions
  • Exam tip blocks on the precise wording examiners expect in definitions and explanations
